There are two legends behind the origin of the name “Hsiang-Shan”. First,it was said that in the age when Zheng Chenggong administered Taiwan, this place was nameless and occupied by a tribe of Taokas aboriginals also called “Chu-Chien-Fan-She”. After the Han people drifted overseas to Taiwan, on seeing what a fertile place Da-Ping-Ding plain was, they filled plenty of unknown wild flowers and plants which let out a sweet aroma, thus giving the place the name of “Hsiang-Shan” (Chinese character meaning sweet smelling mountain). The second origin was handed down from the scholar clique Lin, Hsiu-Chun of Lu-Tzu-Ken area that said, “Hsiang-Shan district was inhabited by Chu-Chien- Fan-She people, the Han people first called it ‘Fan-Shan' and changed it to ‘Hsiang-Shan' afterwards because it didn't sound good.” |
